Vereda Tropical

Banned on its release by the military regime due to its liberatory potential, VEREDA TROPICAL turns fresh fruit and vegetables into objects of desire, telling the hilariously transgressive story of an intelligent, articulate man who just so happens to be in love with a watermelon.

Fainting Spells

In FAINTING SPELLS, Sky Hopinka weaves a set of stories around the Xąwįska or Indian Pipe Plant, which is traditionally used by the Ho-Chunk Nation to revive those who have fainted: conversations with a plant as a guide, protector and friend that also exemplify a specific indigenous perspective on nature.

Usuzumi no sakura

When making USUZUMI NO SAKURA, director Haneda Sumiko talked of conversing with the ancient cherry tree which forms the film’s living, conscious center. The vast, still growing entity has watched over and given solace to the local community in the Gifu prefecture for more than a thousand years.
